Unknown Master, Glory of St. George

18th or 19th century
Fresco
Ceiling of St. George's Chapel, Ljubljana Cathedral

Using the trompe-l'oeil perspective known as di sotto in su, the artist shows putti lifting St. George up to Heaven on a cloud. This device was popular in the 18th century. As in the fresco below, the saint wears the gear of a Roman soldier, but with a large cross on the breastplate.
